Richard Doiron, Poet Moncton, New Brunswick

Richard Doiron's not so much a poet as he's a force of nature. The words have come bursting out of him and for
some 40 years he's been trying to keep up with the torrent and get them down on paper.
He wrote 1,500 sonnets in the year 2000. He took a trip to his hunting camp recently and came home with over
300 poems. I suspect the deer were most pleased with that. Doiron estimates he's written about 20,000 poems as
well as prose and plays, and as you probably know if you're a frequent reader of the Times & Transcript, letters to the
editor since he first started putting pen to paper.
After quitting school at 14 and looking for a way to spend his days, "I'd walk from Parkton into the woods where Centennial
Park is today, sit against a tree and write really bad poetry," Doiron says.
Then in 1964, he saw his work in print for the first time, in this case a letter to the editor of the Moncton Times. A whole
new world of writing opened up, something Doiron frequently describes in distinctly mystical terms, appropriately enough
given the spiritual themes common in his writing.
"I don't understand the phenomenon. I just have to get the words out," he says. "If you're a poet it's not a choice. You're
on call every day."
As for the work, "If I have to work at it more than 15 or 20 minutes, I leave it." He says. He carries his belief in the muse
one step further. "If it's bad, I wrote it, but when it comes, I'm just along for the ride," Doiron says.
His first poem was published in an Ontario newspaper in 1970. Doiron published his first book of poetry in 1978, followed
by two more in 1991 and 1999.
On July 17th, 2002 he launched his fourth volume, My Prayer for Peace
My Prayer for Peace is published by Dreamcatcher Publishing of Saint John. www.dreamcatcher.nb.ca, ISBN-1-894372-18-2
